Hawker Typhoon on D-Day

Early evening June 6th 1944, D-Day. Wing Commander Desmond Scott pilots his Hawker Typhoon over the Normandy coast as the Allied invasion forces cross into German-occupied France. HP Halifax bombers tow Hamilcar gliders while a flight of Spitfires provides top cover as they fly over the Caen canal and Orne river estuary. Oil on Canvas.

This painting was exhibited at the RAF Museum in 1994 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of ‘Operation Overlord’.

 

The artist is pictured here with WWII Forces Sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn who opened the exhibition.
