100 Tons Floating on Air

Short Belfast

A Shorts Belfast heavy lift strategic transport aircraft. This aircraft is XR367, the first of ten Belfasts delivered to the RAF (though the sixth off the production line). Operated by 53 Sqn. at Brize Norton from January 1966,  The RAF named the ten aircraft after mythical Greek giants, this one being 'Heracles'. They were retired in 1976.

Some of these aircraft were acquired by a private freight company after their RAF service and ironically, some of them were chartered by the MoD during the Falklands conflict to transport military equipment. Oil on canvas.
